We all have a space in our house that isn’t quite our favorite. It might be the crawlspace under the kitchen that you try to pretend isn’t there, or the laundry room lined with outdated wallpaper that you tried to get off a few years ago but lost steam halfway through and never finished removing. Even if the space that comes to mind when you hear “not your favorite” is your own closet, we’re here to remind you that you can make this space work for you instead of against you. You don’t need a several thousand-dollar budget to love this space again, just a little inspiration.

Our friend @dianaelizabeth_ did just that with her old garden room closet. She took a dark, outdated space and dressed it up to better serve her household. And here are her redesign tips:

Use peel and stick wallpaper to decorate an accent wall:

Peel and stick wallpaper is the grown-up version of a sticker. It’s much less of a commitment (another name for it is “removable” wallpaper) and it’s less of a mess to install. Especially when you’re working in a smaller space, peel-and-stick wallpaper is a great way to decorate an accent wall.

Install smart wireless LED lights to brighten the whole space (and control them from your ADT app!):

Wireless LED lights are so easy to install and maintain. Whether you’re installing an overhead light for your closet or track lighting to brighten up your shelves, wireless LED lights are a simple way to elevate your space. Most modern lights like these are also smart lights; you can control them all right from your phone. What a bonus- no more fumbling for the light switch in the dark. And how many times have you wished that you could have daylight in your closet? With some smart lights, you can choose any color of the spectrum and your lights will comply.

Add shelving to create more usable space:

Shelving instantly multiplies the capacity of any storage space. Build-your-own kits are available at all major hardware stores, so you can design your shelves to fit your space and aesthetic. The more shelves you have, the more usable space you have- who doesn’t want that?

Use canvas baskets for a more uniform look:

To elevate your organization a little bit more, invest in some canvas baskets for a clean, no-this-isn’t-junk-it’s-important-stuff look. Baskets like these come in every shape, size, color and material. Shop around to see what you like best!

Hopefully, these tips have made all your DIY aspirations feel more attainable. We wish you luck on your organizational journey. Don’t let us stop you at your old closet! Tackle that crawlspace next, and don’t forget to take plenty of before and after photos!
